Wine Tasting Tips
How to Taste Our Wines:
Though tasting of wine is extremely subjective from person-to-person, there are four basic taste sensations: sweet, salt, bitter and acidic. These are the commonly recommended tasting rituals as follows:
- Scan : Pour one to two ounces of wine into glass and grasp the stem of the glass so the heat does not dissipate from your hand to the wine. Hold up to the light to evaluate clarity and color, check to see if the wine is clear or cloudy.
- Sniff : Your first sniff of the wine is the most accurate. Check for the aroma [the odor that emits from a particular grape] – usually the complex scents sensed are due to the aging of the wine. Check to see if you smell hints of spices, fruits or citrus.
- Swirl : The swirling of the wine causes the quick evaporation and this enhances the smell.
- Sip : After taking a sip swish wine around your mouth and making sure it touches all parts of your tongue and the roof of your mouth. Then hold your palate while breathing in and then notice the body of the wine – is it sweet, tart, or bitter?
- Spit or Swallow : Pay close attention to the aftertaste, because some flavors tend to appear only at the end.
